"Algarotti's Book, Newton's Prisms: Myths of Science in the Eighteenth Century"
Francesco Algarotti's Newtonianism for Ladies (1737) was one of the most popular and widely discussed scientific books of its time. Frequently reprinted and translated, it became a barometer of the passion for Newtonian science in the eighteenth century. This talk explores the relationship between Algarotti's book and another icon of Newtonian science – Isaac Newton's prisms which he did the "crucial experiment" separating light into the spectrum of colors. How did Algarotti present himself as a Newtonian?
