German Film: Maskerade (in Wien)
Maskerade (in Wien) // 1934 - Austria // Directed by Willi Forst
A genuine piece of film history. This highly entertaining film of intrigue and betrayal is set in Viennese high society around 1900 and represents the genre of "Wienerfilm" that was very popular at the time: Nostalgic looks back when Vienna society was sooo glamorous. It is the first film role in the prominent career of famous stage actress Paula Wessely. Virtuoso filming by Austria's Franz Planer with his lively and beautifully lit compositions and the great set and dress design. An early "talkie". The microphones were not very sensitive, they had to be brought as close to the performers as possible and had to be hidden behind all sorts of objects such as armchairs, bookshelves and vases. The actors had to be constantly instructed to speak louder, which caused a number of acting problems in scenes in which it was necessary to speak quietly.
The film was a commercial success worldwide and it was remade "verbatim" in Hollywood in 1935 with the title "Escapade". A great triumph for stars William Powell and Luise Rainer.
