Born into a poor farming family, Kari was a small and fragile baby. The doctor who delivers Kari does not give the newborn much chance of survival. He says to the poor father – with so many mouths to feed – do you really need such a runt? Kari not only survives – he blossoms into a cheerful young man who believes in the beauty of life. At 20 he meets the gentle and beautiful Annemarie. It is love at first sight. Kari is thunderstruck. While other girls turned away from Kari – Annemarie is enraptured by his outgoing personality and determination to win her heart. But, as we know, life is complicated and often not very nice to the meek and underdogs of society.
